South Rome Corp. Approves Purchase of McCall Hospital

Oct 15, 2013 -- 10:29pm

By: Kevin Karel (WRGA News)

A major property purchase was green-lighted Tuesday at the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation meeting that would allow for the construction of new housing.

The Redevelopment Corporation signed an option to purchase the McCall Hospital property for $69,300, a price 1% below its appraised value. One of the more dilapidated structures in South Rome, Board Chairman Sam Moss says the site will be demolished to make way for housing units. To get the project started the Board also voted to approve a required $5,900 environmental assessment and Phase 1 study for the site to start the process of securing the desired federal funds. City of Rome Community Development Director Bekki Fox, serving in an interim role for the Corporation, explains the funding process for the project;

“The specific funding that we’re after is Neighborhood Stabilization Program Funds. They generate from HUD and they went to the Department of Community Affairs here in Georgia and then they’ve been allocated out to entities. Well the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission is our local entity that has the funds, so we are making an application to them to give us funding that will do the acquisition and future demolition of the building. Because those are federal funds there are a ton of federal regulations that go with that and environmental assessment is part of that.”

Fox says HUD has a non-negotiable expenditure deadline of March 28th 2014 which requires the assessment to be completed, the property closed upon, demolition completed and all bills paid in order to receive federal aid for the project.

In other news the committee discussed plans for the South Rome Golf Tournament which will be held at the Coosa Country Club on Monday November 4th.

Georgia Power also presented a donation check of $25,000 toward the Early Learning Center in the new Anna K. Davie Elementary School.
