Matt Laughridge Running For Georgia Senate

The field vying for Barry Loudermilk’s State Senate seat in District 14 got a bit more crowded Friday morning with the announcement from Cartersville businessman Matt Laughridge that he was entering the race.

Laughridge, who declared on WBHF Radio, will have to go through at least one other Bartow County candidate in fellow businessman Bruce Thompson, who reaffirmed his desire to run in August as a Republican. The seat is up for grabs this November. Whoever wins will serve in the state legislature starting in January next year before running for reelection in November 2014.

District 14 is primarily Cherokee County but also contains parts of Bartow and Cobb.

Loudermilk’s resignation is a move to better focus on pursuit of the U.S. House of Representatives. The domino effect of Saxby Chambliss’ retirement from the U.S. Senate led Phil Gingrey to announce he was leaving his post in the House to switch chambers on Capitol Hill. Shortly thereafter Loudermilk made public his plans to fill the void Gingrey will leave behind in the House.
