UPDATE 10:15 AM WEDNESDAY: Cartersville Police Lieutenant Mark Camp unveiled new information about the murder of Candice Piper shortly before a press conference Wednesday morning at police headquarters.
Camp says Piper's accused killer, Deandre Hightower, was stopped behind a church near Piper's apartment complex by a citizen who had followed the alleged murderer since he fled the crime scene. Camp says the citizen stopped Hightower and held him at gunpoint until police arrived to arrest him.
Camp states that Hightower, who was previously homeless, began living in Piper's apartment within the last week, after the two met online;
"We do know that he had been living with the victim in her apartment for about four days. The best that we can determine at this point, it appears that they had had contact at an online dating site. How he got access to that originally I don't know, or where he was accessing it from we don't know yet, but they apparently met online and arrangements were made for him to come to the residence. He had two suitcases with him that he brought to the residence and that he took with him immediately after the incident took place."
The identity of the second female victim was also announced as Rosa Williams. Her age and exact relationship to the victim is not known at this time. She escaped the apartment by fending off Hightower with a stool and running to safety. She then called police. Williams received only minor injuries after being slammed against a wall.
UPDATE 7 AM WEDNESDAY: The victim has been identified as Candice Piper, age 29, of Cartersville. A press conference will be held at the Cartersville Police Department Wednesday morning at 10:30. Further details are expected to be released at that time.
UPDATE 5 PM TUESDAY: Cartersville police have identified the suspect who was arrested and linked with the homicide that occurred earlier Tuesday at Alexandria Landing Apartment Complex. According to Captain Mark Camp, 20-year-old Deandre Davoughin Hightower of Cartersville has been charged with one count of Murder, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault and two counts of False Imprisonment. The identity of the victim is still pending, as her next of kin have yet to been notified.
A news briefing will be held at the Cartersville Police Department tomorrow morning at 10:30am, where it is anticipated the 29-year-old female victim will be identified.
UPDATE 4 PM TUESDAY: Lt. Camp and Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton still are unable to release the names of the murder victim, or the male suspect being held in the case. Camp did however state that the suspect is a 20-year-old male who was captured in the woods behind a church that's near the apartment complex within 20 minutes of police being notified of the murder.
Cartersville Police responded to the scene of a homicide Tuesday morning.
According to Lieutenant Mark Camp with Cartersville PD, officers were called to an apartment at 370 Old Mill Road about 9:50 am Tuesday, where a victim had apparently been fatally stabbed.
The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time but Camp revealed that the body is that of a 29-year-old female.
A second source within the Bartow County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a second unnamed victim had been hurt at the scene, but was still alive. Camp says that victim is a black female.
Cartersville police have a male suspect in custody, but they have not yet made his identity public.
The murder took place at the ‘Alexandria Landing’ apartments in Cartersville.
