A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Rockmart Friday night.

Polk County Deputy Coroner Tony Brazier says that Friday night around 7:44pm, 911 dispatch received a call of a vehicle on pedestrian accident on Vinson Mountain rd. in Rockmart. The victim was 40-year-old Barry Allen Hitchcock, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Hitchcock had just returned home from work and was crossing the road to check his mailbox when he was struck by a Minivan.

The driver of the vehicle was reportedly so shaken up by the incident he was transported by Redmond EMS to a local hospital. The family was on their way to WellStar Kennestone hospital in Marietta, where a relative was being treated after a motor vehicle accident earlier in the day. They were traveling out of Rockmart on Vinson Mountain Rd. when Hitchcock was struck.

The Georgia State patrol and Polk County Police are investigating the wreck. It is unknown whether the driver will face charges or not.
