Pedestrian struck and killed

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a fatal wreck involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Old Summerville Road that occurred Sunday.

According to Floyd County Coroner Barry Henderson, John Geoffrey Spann, age 23 of 904 Old Summerville Road was struck on Sunday by a late model Ford Fusion sedan driven by 34-year-old Scott Edwin Ballard of a Foliage Road address in Rome. Spann was transported to Floyd Medical Center with massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. Monday in the Intensive Care Unit.

According to an accident report from the Georgia State Patrol, Spann was walking his dog with another individual when he darted into the path of the vehicle in the roadway trying to retrieve the animal.

Ballard faces a charge of Driving on a Suspended License and is unlikely to face any additional charges.
