After her alleged actions in the Wal-Mart parking lot last week landed her in jail and garnered national media attention, Bartow County School Board Member and Board-Vice-Chairman Angie Cornett resigned her post on Thursday afternoon. While Cornett herself made no comment, her attorney John Mroczko spoke briefly with WBHF in Cartersville;
"On behalf of Ms. Angie Cornett (we) have submitted to the Governor and to the Superintendent of the Bartow County Schools Ms. Angie Cornett's resignation. She has decided to resign from her position as a school board member effective this 3rd day of January 2013."
The Bartow County Sheriff’s Department unveiled the Wal-Mart surveillance video of Cornett allegedly striking 17-year-old Adairsville High student Emily Gulledge as the two were apparently arguing over a parking space Gulledge was saving for a friend. Cornett told police Gulledge walked into her vehicle, but the video clearly shows Cornett accelerating into the space with the victim standing in her way. Bartow Schools Superintendent Dr. John Harper reacted to Cornett’s resignation;
"I've enjoyed my work with her, she's been a good board member for us...hate to see the situation occur with her that would cause her to resign but...she's always thought very carefully about the kids in all the decisions she's made...and that's why they serve."
Cornett is no stranger to headlines as controversial comments she made during a school board meeting about system personnel made local news last fall.
She is facing one count of Reckless Conduct for the Wal-Mart incident.
