It’s another year as Mayor for Evie McNeice.

The Rome City Commission voted unanimously Monday evening to renew Evie McNiece’s chair as Mayor for a third term. McNiece, who is the city’s first female Mayor, thanked the commission for their continued confidence in her.

“Well, it’s certainly an honor to be elected by my peers,” she said. “They’re showing a lot of confidence in the role I’ve played and I’m so very appreciative of that.”

City Manager John Bennett and all other commission-elected officials maintained their seats, with the exception of Mayor Pro-Tem Kim Canada. Commissioner Buzz Wachsteter offered up Jamie Doss for the position, citing his tremendous work with the 2012 budget. The motion was seconded by Canada, and with unanimous support, Doss replaced him as the Mayor’s back-up.

Even though the Lewis family’s backyard hens were listed on the agenda for first reading, there was very little mention of chickens at the meeting. However, McNeice said they did discuss the issue at their 5pm caucus, and a conclusion is in-sight.

“We did have a discussion regarding the chicken issue. We know that it’s been on the table for a long time, but it’s a very important issue to the city and it isn’t something that should be taken lightly,” she explained. “Tonight we had just a first reading. We will be bringing it up in the next several weeks, hopefully coming to a conclusion shortly.”

The fate of the Lewis’ hens and all chickens in Rome has been tied up in the cogs of government for over three months now. In light of this, Commissioner Bill Collins thanked Chris Lewis and his family for their continued dedication to the issue.
