Former Gordon County business ‘Wheeler’s Building Center’ in downtown Calhoun caught fire late Wednesday afternoon, forcing road closures and sending flames more than 20 feet into the air.
According to Gordon County 9-1-1 and Calhoun Police Lieutenant Tony Pyle, the blaze at ‘Wheeler’s’, which closed last year, was called in shortly before 3:45 pm Wednesday. Pyle says witnesses at the scene described a loud noise before seeing the flames;
"At this time I believe the cause of the fire is undetermined. I spoke with people in the area and they advised they had heard a loud pop and they had called this in...maybe like some type of explosion. It was a builder's supply, it had closed I believe last year but was still being used for storage of some material. I don't know exactly what is stored in there but it being a building supply at one time, I would assume that it would be lumber and possibly flammable chemicals as well."
No injuries have been reported and emergency officials believe the building was vacant when the fire started. Pyle could not offer comment on any suspicion of arson in the case.
