A young boy’s leg was partially severed in a vicious dog attack in White Monday afternoon.

WBHF reports that a 10-year-old boy was getting off the school bus with his sister on Wey Bridge Court when a Sheppard-mixed breed dog charged them. The child attempted to get away, beating the animal with his book bag, but he was unsuccessful. His father, Jose Gallegos, witnessed the attack.

“He was running and jumping on his back,” Gallegos says. “And then when he fell, the dog grabbed his leg and started biting and shaking it.”

The boy’s mother got the dog off of him by beating it with a scooter. An Animal Control Spokesman says that both they and Bartow County Sherriff Deputies arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.

“When we got there, the ambulance was there to transport the child,” the spokesman says. “When the road officer was trying to apprehend the animal, the dog charged at both him and the deputy, and the deputy shot and killed the dog.”

The child was taken to Cartersville Medical Center, and is expected to make a full recovery. According to Animal Control, the dog was a stray that neighbors had recently taken in.
