Cartersville Police Chief Tommy Culpepper has announced the arrest of a local man on child abuse and battery charges for allegedly breaking several bones in the body of his six-week-old baby.
According to Cartersville Police Captain Mark Camp the baby was taken to the emergency room at Cartersville Medical Center Wednesday evening to be treated for a knot on her head. Hospital staff discovered the infant had several broken bones including fractures to her femur, ribs, lower leg and even her skull. Officers then arrested Dustin Michael Lewis, age 18 of Cartersville, and charged him with one count of 1st Degree Child Cruelty and Aggravated Battery. Lewis remained in custody at the Bartow County Jail late Friday morning.
The suspect is the boyfriend of the baby’s mother Elizabeth Sanders, who told police she first noticed the knot after Lewis had been alone in a bedroom feeding the baby.
Police have placed the child in State care as the investigation continues. Camp says further charges are possible for Lewis in the case.
