The situation is worse than originally thought as 119 total employees of the Floyd County School system were let go Friday.

The somber news was delivered by school administrators and supervisors starting early Friday. Of those laid off, 68 were full-time certified positions, anyone from Pre-K teachers to school administrators. Para-pros, food service and bus drivers were also impacted as another 35 layoffs were included for full-time classified employees. School system spokesman Tim Hensley released the figures Friday afternoon. He says the timing of the layoffs came down to giving those affected time to make adjustments and find other jobs before contracts are signed in May.

“Not a good thing to do anytime, but we wanted to at least provide our folks with the best opportunity possible to be able to find a position for next year...so that was our thinking going into this process.”

The personnel cuts will help offset a nearly $7 million deficit for the next fiscal year beginning in July. Since 2003, austerity cuts from the state have totaled almost $50 million and about $9 million lost in the last 4 years.
