A Daycare full of children and at least nine other homes were damaged Tuesday evening in a downburst in southern Gordon County.
Much of Northwest Georgia was under a severe thunderstorm watch when the strong column of air struck an area of homes between Morrow Rd. and Bellwood Rd. in Calhoun. Gordon Emergency Management Director Richard Cooper says thankfully, no one was injured.
“Several homes were damaged; Several little barns and outbuildings were completely destroyed. And, a tree fell across a daycare inside one of the residences. Kids were at the daycare at the time, but no one was injured,” he says. “The response from the Public Safety Agency was real quick, it’s just right down the road from the fire department. The fire department was here pretty fast, along with myself. We started canvassing the area and looking for injuries.”
Luckily, the damaged area was near but not a part of the recovering path of homes and businesses that were struck by January 30th’s EF-3 Tornado.
