Hundreds of athletes gathered at Darlington School Thursday morning for the annual Floyd County Special Olympics.

The event attracted more than 265 students from the Rome City and Floyd County Schools, along with the Georgia School for the Deaf.

According to a press release from Darlington School, Special Olympics was founded on the belief that people with intellectual disability can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports.

The event was originally scheduled for April 5th but was postponed due to rain and cold weather.
