Atlanta Braves five time All-Star catcher Brain McCann will begin a rehab assignment with Rome starting tonight.
AJC Braves beat writer Dave O’ Brien reports McCann is set to play his first game with the club in Greensboro, North Carolina this evening as he works back to game shape from shoulder surgery in the offseason.
The Rome Braves are coming off an 8-6 victory over Kannapolis Thursday, evening their record at 10-10 on the young season.
Rome returns home to State Mutual Stadium on Wednesday against Greenville. The Rome Braves issued a press release stating they believe McCann will still be with the Single-A franchise when they return from their current road trip.
McCann was a member of the inaugural 2003 Rome Braves team that went on to win the South Atlantic League Championship. He is also the only former player to have his jersey retired by the minor league affiliate.
