A little bit of rain didn’t stop the crowds from pouring into Ridge Ferry Park this weekend to taste some of the finest wings and barbeque the south has to offer.
Roman Roast on the River Attendees ventured from booth to booth Saturday, sampling freshly smoked BBQ and handing out tickets for their favorites. Many of the competitors, BBQ sauce still smeared on their shirts, said the turnout was pretty good.
“Turnout was good,” said Will Wenfro with Wilbur’s Been Smoking Something Barbeque. “We got some tickets—I don’t know how many we got, I was in the back cooking. I think we had a pretty good cook.”
Though overall, there were less teams competing for the ultimate pork prize, Rome/Floyd Parks and Recreation Coordinator Will Pennscott says, the event was still very much a success.
“We had a pretty good turnout, definitely considering the weather. We had a few less teams---we had like 30 something pro teams and 20 something backyard teams, which was down a little bit from last year, but, we had a little competition this weekend with other cook-offs,” Pennscott said. “We had a great success. We added the kids barbeque this year, had a lot of great music. I think everyone had a great time. “
Competition was deliciously tough, but Team Kudzu Q out of Atlanta took the lead in the professional category. As for the backyard division, No Joking Smokin’ were crowned champions for 2013.
