Deputy coroner releases ID of pedestrian stuck by train

Polk County Deputy Coroner Tony Brazier identified the pedestrian struck and killed by a train in Rockmart Thursday as Michael Wayne King, 29 of Hogue Avenue in Rockmart.

Multiple agencies are investigating the death of a pedestrian in Rockmart who was struck by a Norfolk Southern train.

Just before 2:30 Thursday afternoon, Polk County 911 received the call of a man being struck by a train between Piedmont Avenue and Hogue Avenue near downtown Rockmart. When police, fire, and medical personnel arrived, they discovered the gruesome scene.

Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells says they are currently trying to contact relatives and will not release the identity until next of kin is notified.

The train blocked nearly all railroad crossings inside the city for almost three hours Thursday afternoon. The accident remains under investigation.

According to Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells, multiple agencies were on the scene Thursday afternoon after a pedestrian attempted to cross the tracks between Piedmont Ave. and Hogue Ave. Law enforcement continue to investigate the scene and have not released a reason why the pedestrian was crossing at this particular place or who that person is. More details are expected to be released later.
