On the heels of last week’s rise in the jobless numbers statewide, the Northwest Georgia region also saw a spike in the percentage of those without work.

Metro Rome’s unemployment rate rose from 9.3% in May to 9.8% in June, which is a half point jump in just a month’s time. According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the rate increased primarily because of seasonal factors, including large numbers of educators being unemployed in the summer and unemployed graduates. While the number of jobs remained the same month over month, the labor force grew slightly, which contributed to the rise in unemployment in Rome.

County by county, Polk County had the lowest jobless rate of surrounding counties at 8.7%. Leading all Northwest Georgia counties once again is Whitfield with an 11.7% rate. Gordon County remained in double digit unemployment at 10.2 percent. Bartow checked in at 9.2%, while Chattooga’s rate rose to 10.8%.
