State Senator Barry Loudermilk announced Tuesday morning he will be resigning his post under the gold dome in order to focus on his run for the U.S. House of Representatives next year.

Touting the need for strong conservative values in congress, the 14th District Senator announced his campaign in April for the house seat Congressman Phil Gingrey will be giving up to run for U.S. Senate. With the recent move of the GOP primary from July up to May, the Cassville resident says his decision to resign now is best for all those involved;

“The fact is with the moving of the primary to May 20th it would be impossible to effectively serve the people of the district like I’ve been doing over the past several years, because you know when I’m down there I’m putting all my heart, my soul and my energy into legislating while I’m there. With this campaign going and how serious we are about winning this congressional seat there is no way that I could give the attention that is needed under the Gold Dome when we’re in session and run this campaign…We felt it was the right thing to do to go ahead and step aside and allow for someone to be elected to fulfill the rest of this term.”

Loudermilk’s resignation becomes effective Wednesday September 4th. His replacement in District 14 will be chosen during the November 5th election. There will be no primary race.

In recent years Loudermilk has represented much of the region in the State Senate, including parts of Floyd, Bartow and Cherokee counties. Prior to that, he served in the State House of Representatives beginning in 2005.

The competition for the U.S. 12th District House seat will be fierce---At least four other Republican candidates have come forward with their intentions to run, including former Presidential hopeful Bob Barr and current Georgia House Republican Majority Whip Edward Lindsey.
