Georgia Teacher of the Year to Speak at Berry College

Jemelleh Coes, 2014 Georgia Teacher of the Year, will speak Thursday (Oct. 3) on “Weapons of Mass Construction: Unlocking the Potential of Students with Disabilities” at the Berry College McAllister Auditorium.
 
The lecture, at 7 p.m., focuses on the idea that every student is capable of success if teachers  if teachers tap into the student’s unique gifts and interests. This event is free and open to the public.
 
Coes, a fifth-year rookie, is a special education English, language arts and reading teacher from Langston Chapel Middle School in Statesboro, Ga. She chairs a program called Delta Academy, which fosters a love of science, technology, engineering and math for middle school girls in Southeast Georgia. She is also a mentor at a group home for homeless girls in Bulloch County.
 
As Teacher of the Year, Coes will represent Georgia teachers by speaking to the public about the teaching profession and possibly conducting workshops and programs for educators. She will also compete for the 2014 National Teacher of the Year.
