Polk County Police are investigating skeletal remains that were found Friday afternoon in a wooded area of Rockmart.
According to Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd, human bones were discovered by a man chasing after his dog, 200 yards off of Knox Mountain Rd.
The remains were turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Their crime lab will use dental records to identify the deceased, but Chief Dodd could not say when this would be. Due to recent closures of similar facilities, he suspects the labs are behind.
In the mean time, Polk County Police are treating the death as a homicide. Though they are currently looking through missing person reports, Dodd says he has some leads as to who the bones belong too. The identity will not be released, however, until the official report from the crime lab.
