The Rome City School system has named its next Superintendent, following a special called meeting Wednesday morning by the Rome Board of Education.
According to an official at central office, the board named Dr. Jeff Bearden as its next Superintendent, replacing current Superintendent Gayland Cooper who is set to retire at the end of this week.
Bearden was among a short list of three finalists for the head job, which also included current Superintendent of the Pelham City Schools Dr. James Arnold and Gordon County Schools top man Dr. Bill McCown. Bearden was also in the top three finalists for the Superintendent’s post for the Floyd County School system.
A report in The Citizen newspaper says that Bearden’s contract with Fayette County Schools will end on December 31. In the meantime, former Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lucian Harris will serve in the interim role.
Bearden will assume the role of Rome City Schools Superintendent sometime in January, following the completion of his current contract.
