One person was killed as the result of a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a car on Highway 278 Wednesday afternoon in Rockmart, in front of the Wal-Mart.

Polk County Coroner Trey Litesey has identified the victim as Ivanette Alexander Turner, age 86, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, James Alfred Turner, age 87, was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center to be treated for critical injuries. He remained alive late Thursday morning but was said to still be receiving treatment in the intensive-care-unit.

The deceased was a passenger, while James Turner was the driver. Rockmart City Police Chief Keith Sorrells confirmed the death shortly before 3 pm Wednesday. Sorrells said the driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.

The crash forced law enforcement to shut down Highway 278 in all directions for a short period of time.
