Unemployment up in Northwest Georgia

A mixed bag of news when it comes to Northwest Georgia’s unemployment numbers for December as the region’s jobless rate rose to 9%, a six-tenths of a percentage point rise over the previous month.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the rate rose due mostly in part to an increase in the labor force as more people have begun searching for work. Despite the rise month-over-month, the rate is half a percent lower than the same time last year.

Metro Rome’s unemployment rate was a bit higher than the region, as 9.8% of the metro’s workforce was without a job in December, up slightly from November but significantly better than December 2011 when the jobless rate was 10.5% in Rome.

Bartow and Polk Counties checked in at 8.6% unemployment in December, while Gordon County saw their rate settle at 9.7%. Whitfield County had one of the highest rates in Northwest Georgia at 10.9, with Paulding and Cobb Counties showing unemployment rates at 8.0 and 7.6 respectively.
