After sleet, snow and freezing rain, Northwest Georgia is now facing the threat of severe thunderstorms Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system will roll into the area around 3am and gain intensity as the day goes on, bringing with it frequent lightening, hail, heavy rain and strong, damaging, or ‘straight-line’ winds. Tornados are also a risk in this storm; the Weather Channel claims North Georgia has a moderate chance of a twister.

While a tornado is certainly a threat to life and home, straight-line winds can be just as, if not more, dangerous. Winds are expected to reach as high as 40 mph in the heat of the storm, which could down power lines and trees.

Keep it tuned to us online for the latest weather updates. And, if a Tornado Warning is issued, seek the lowest, interior room in your home. If you’re driving and cannot escape the oncoming Tornado, stop the car, but leave it running so the airbags can deploy, and crouch down below the windows.
