An apartment building in Rome appears to be a total loss after an early morning blaze Thursday left a number of families homeless.
The call came in just after 5 a.m. as Rome Fire units responded to the fire that destroyed or heavily damaged 20 units at the Ashton Ridge Apartments on Callier Springs Road. Rome Fire Deputy Chief Benny Bohannon says several units were already fully involved upon arrival.
"All the apartments were occupied and everyone made it out safely," said Bohannon.
The American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia is assisting the 60 residents displaced by the blaze by offering a shelter at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Rome. The Red Cross will be offering additional assistance at the church including clothing and toiletries.
