Atlanta’s professional baseball club opened their season amid much fanfare on Monday evening. Thursday night it’s the local Braves franchise that gets a turn at christening the 2013 campaign.
On the road, but not too far away in Savannah, the Rome Braves will be taking on the Sand Gnats at 6:35 pm Thursday and 7:05 Friday before returning home to Floyd County for the home opener at State Mutual Stadium Saturday evening. General Manager Mike Dunn says the accomplishments of Rome Braves alumni at the major league level have strengthened the love for the franchise locally;
"The end result of the player that has come out of here really gives the fan an ownership. When you see someone like a Jeff Francoeur, Brian McCann, a Martin Prado, a Tommy Hanson, a Kris Medlen, Craig Kimbrel...all those guys that have played right here all season long and then for them to go on to a relatively good career at the major league level, I think that's something that the fans identify with. And we certainly are proud and are thankful that we are able to get them here and then move them on to the next level."
Among the players to watch on the Rome Braves roster this season is 2012 1st round pick Lucas Sims, an Atlanta-area native considered one of the organizations top prospects.
A fireworks show will follow Saturday night’s home opener at State Mutual Stadium.
