Last week’s storms that brought wind and hail damage for many residents in Northwest Georgia apparently dropped a tornado in eastern Polk County.
A report from the National Weather Service says an EF1 tornado touched down near the Braswell community in extreme southeast Polk County and remained on the ground for a little less than a minute. Polk County Emergency Management Agency Director Randy Lacey says a number of trees were down along Coots Lake Road and Braswell Mountain Road, but the most costly damage was from hail damage.
“We escaped any major damage,” said Lacey. “We had a considerable amount of hail damage, one car lot on the east side receiving over $15,000 worth of damage to vehicles.”
The brief tornado was the second twister associated with a line of severe storms that moved up from Haralson County through parts of Polk, Bartow and Paulding Counties. No other major damage was reported from last week’s storms.
