Multiple agencies responded Thursday to a home in a Rockmart neighborhood after a mortgage company employee located explosives in the basement of a foreclosed home.

According to Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells, authorities immediately evacuated surrounding homes in the Callaway Estates subdivision mid morning Thursday.

He says the former occupant of the home was a demolitions expert and had recently passed away, leaving the dynamite unattended inside the home on Callaway Club for some time.

“It’s pretty unusual to run into this situation,” said Sorrells.

“The gentleman, having been a demolitions expert, may have thought nothing of it. It a neighborhood like that, it could have been catastrophic.”

Polk County Sheriff Johnny Moats said they disposed of 8 dynamite sticks, each roughly the size of a large flashlight in a remote location.

The Northwest Georgia Bomb Squad was dispatched to handle the transportation and disposal of the explosives.

Agencies from Polk County, including Rockmart and Polk County Police Departments, as well as the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Rockmart Fire Department all responded to the scene.

No one was hurt and residents were allowed to return to their homes just after 12:30 Thursday afternoon.
