Roses For Ellen

May 14, 2014--3:39 p.m.

In honor of Ellen Axson Wilson's birthday, Rome Area Council for the Arts invite members of the community to place roses at her grave in Myrtle Hill Cemetery or display roses at your home or place of business on May 15.

Community members can also post a photo of roses on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #RosesForEllen.

Ellen Axson Wilson was born May 15, 1860, grew up in Rome, and eventually served as the First Lady of the United States. She was an accomplished artist and active citizen who designed and established the White House Rose Garden in 1913 before her tragic early death in 1914.

The "Roses for Ellen" event marks the inauguration of a year of remembrance reflecting on Mrs. Wilson's life and accomplishments 100 years following her death and burial in Rome, Georgia.\
